Open Sinus Lifting
What is Open Sinus Lifting?
Open sinus lifting is a surgical procedure used to increase bone height in the upper jaw (posterior maxilla) to allow for successful placement of dental implants. It involves gently lifting the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material beneath it.
Why is it needed?
When the bone in the upper jaw is too thin or has shrunk due to tooth loss, implants cannot be securely placed. Open sinus lifting creates enough bone volume to support implants safely and effectively.
Procedure Overview:
- Performed under local anesthesia (sometimes with sedation)
- A small window is created in the bone to access the sinus
- The sinus membrane is carefully lifted
- Bone graft material is placed to encourage new bone growth
- Healing time is typically 6–9 months before implant placement
Aftercare & Recovery:
- Mild swelling and discomfort are normal
- Avoid blowing your nose or sneezing forcefully for several days
- Follow your dentist’s instructions regarding medications and oral hygiene
- Attend follow-up appointments to monitor healing
Risks & Considerations:
As with any surgery, there are risks such as sinus membrane perforation, infection, or graft failure. Your dental specialist will evaluate your case carefully to minimize these risks.
